Overview ¶
Package delivery puts board messages into agent sessions that are already open. It holds the delivery daemon's core: which sessions are open, which agent each is bound to, the journal of every bundle handed to a harness, and the rules for when a bundle is handed over, confirmed and acknowledged. Harnesses, servers, the journal's storage and the control socket are reached only through the ports declared in ports.go.

Reason codes recorded on failed or skipped deliveries and reported by aboard doctor.

Limits and timings of delivery.

Control socket operations.
const ( // EventWaiting says the session took the wait: from now on a prompt releases it. EventWaiting = "waiting" // EventDeliver carries a bundle; the hook answers OpReceived. EventDeliver = "deliver" // EventRelease tells the hook to exit without a bundle. EventRelease = "release" // EventWelcome answers OpHello once the session is registered. EventWelcome = "welcome" )
Events sent back on a waiting connection.
const MaxFrame = 128 << 10
MaxFrame is the largest control socket message, in bytes, including its newline.
const MidTurnLimit = 9000
MidTurnLimit is the most text, in bytes, one tool boundary adds to a busy turn. Claude Code takes at most 10,000 characters of context from a hook and moves anything longer to a file, so the limit stays under that with room for the notice.
const ProtocolVersion = 1
ProtocolVersion is the version every control socket message carries.
const ReasonExtensionOutdated = "extension_outdated"
ReasonExtensionOutdated identifies a session whose extension needs updating.
const ReasonNoTurn = "no_turn_started"
ReasonNoTurn is why a delivery stalled: its idle session started no turn.
Variables ¶
var ( // ErrBusy means the session can't take a bundle now. It never counts as an attempt. ErrBusy = errors.New("session is busy") // ErrTargetAbsent means the session no longer exists in its harness. ErrTargetAbsent = errors.New("session no longer exists") // ErrSubAgent means the session is a sub-agent thread, not a root conversation. ErrSubAgent = errors.New("session is a sub-agent thread") ErrUnauthorized = errors.New("token rejected") // ErrSeatMismatch means a claimed seat identity differs from its token's identity. ErrSeatMismatch = errors.Join(ErrUnauthorized, errors.New("seat identity mismatch")) // ErrBoardGone means the agent's token works but its board answers board_not_found // to it, which no later request changes. ErrBoardGone = errors.New("the agent's board is gone") // ErrLoginMissing means there is no human login for the server. ErrLoginMissing = errors.New("no human login for this server") )
Errors that adapters return, so the daemon can decide what a failure means.
var ( // ErrServerUnreachable means the server couldn't be reached, failed (a 5xx), or its // answer was lost. ErrServerUnreachable = errors.New("the server can't be reached") // ErrServerOutdated means the server has no machine delegations. ErrServerOutdated = errors.New("the server has no machine delegations") )
var ErrExtensionOutdated = errors.New("the extension does not support combined handoffs")
ErrExtensionOutdated means the connected extension cannot receive combined handoffs.
var ErrFrameTooLarge = errors.New("control message too large")
ErrFrameTooLarge means a control socket message was larger than MaxFrame.
Functions ¶
func Concerns ¶
Concerns reports whether m concerns the agent called name, so that in focused mode it wakes the agent's session: a person sent it, it is addressed to the agent or its role (an inbox holds only messages addressed to the agent, its role or everyone, and those whose mention wakes it, so any target but all), its mention wakes the agent, it replies to one of the agent's messages, it asks for a reply, or it is urgent. A message whose targets aren't known counts as addressed.
Types ¶
type Adapter ¶
type Adapter interface {
// Harness is the harness's name, such as "codex".
Harness() string
// Validate checks that the exact session can receive deliveries. It returns
// ErrTargetAbsent for a session that doesn't exist and ErrSubAgent for a sub-agent.
Validate(ctx context.Context, sessionID string) error
// WaitsForIdle is true when bundles go only to a hook waiting while the session is
// idle, and false when the harness queues bundles itself.
WaitsForIdle() bool
// Hand gives a bundle to the session. confirmed is true when the harness's
// acceptance alone confirms the session received it. ErrBusy means the session
// can't take it now and the bundle stays pending.
Hand(ctx context.Context, h Handover) (confirmed bool, err error)
}
Adapter is how the daemon reaches one harness. A new harness is a new Adapter; it never reads the journal, moves a read position or holds a token.
type AgentKey ¶
AgentKey identifies a seat independently of its display name. Board and Name distinguish unresolved journal entries, which cannot yet name a verified seat.
type AgentProblem ¶
AgentProblem is an agent whose deliveries stopped, such as one with a revoked token.
type AgentRef ¶
type AgentRef struct {
Server string `json:"server"`
Board string `json:"board"`
Name string `json:"name"`
MemberID string `json:"member_id,omitempty"`
}
AgentRef names one agent: its server, its board and its name there. An agent belongs to exactly one board.
type Binding ¶
type Binding struct {
RetainSiblings bool `json:"-"`
Generation uint64
Agent AgentRef
Session SessionKey
BoundAt time.Time
}
Binding says which session an agent's messages go to.
type BindingStatus ¶
type BindingStatus struct {
Agent AgentRef `json:"agent"`
Session string `json:"session"`
// Open is true while the session is open.
Open bool `json:"open,omitempty"`
// Turned is true once the session has run a turn, so the harness can resume it.
Turned bool `json:"turned,omitempty"`
}
BindingStatus is one agent and the session it is bound to.
type BoardCreateOptions ¶ added in v0.1.1
type BoardCreateOptions struct {
Name string `json:"name,omitempty"`
Title string `json:"title,omitempty"`
Template string `json:"template,omitempty"`
Charter string `json:"charter,omitempty"`
Preset string `json:"preset,omitempty"`
Visibility string `json:"visibility,omitempty"`
}
BoardCreateOptions are the public API's board creation options.
type Build ¶
type Build struct {
// Version is the release version, compared as a semantic version.
Version string `json:"version"`
// Commit and CommitTime name the Git commit the binary was built from, when known.
Commit string `json:"commit,omitempty"`
CommitTime time.Time `json:"commit_time,omitzero"`
}
Build identifies the aboard build a daemon or server runs, so a newer command can tell an older one apart and replace it.
type Class ¶
type Class string
Class is derived from every admitted message, never from rendered text.
type Config ¶
type Config struct {
Journal Journal
// ResolveAgent verifies a seat using its saved credential. Nil is used by
// adapters whose agent references are already trusted, such as contract fixtures.
ResolveAgent func(context.Context, AgentRef) (AgentRef, error)
Adapters []Adapter
// Connect returns the connection to one server. It is called once per server URL,
// when the first agent on that server is bound.
Connect func(serverURL string) Server
Control Control
// Processes checks that each open session's harness still runs. Nil means sessions
// close only when their end hook says so.
Processes Processes
Clock clock.Clock
Log *slog.Logger
// PID and Build are reported by the status operation.
PID int
Build Build
// IdleExit overrides how long the daemon runs with no open session; zero means
// the default.
IdleExit time.Duration
// Tickets holds the launch tickets aboard swarm up writes. Nil means a launch
// ticket binds nothing.
Tickets Tickets
// Seats lists and joins boards for sessions through the machine's delegation
// (seats.go). Nil means the boards and join operations refuse.
Seats Seats
// contains filtered or unexported fields
}
Config is everything the daemon needs from outside.
type Control ¶
Control is the socket hooks and the CLI use to talk to the daemon. Accept returns only connections from this OS user.
type Daemon ¶
type Daemon struct {
// contains filtered or unexported fields
}
Daemon delivers messages to the sessions open on this machine.
type Delivery ¶
type Delivery struct {
HandoffID string
ID int64
Agent AgentRef
// Session and Boot are the session the delivery was last handed to.
Session SessionKey
Boot string
State State
Seqs []int
Attempts int
// Reason is the code of the last failure, such as codex_target_absent.
Reason string
RetryAt time.Time
CreatedAt time.Time
UpdatedAt time.Time
// AcceptedAt is when the harness accepted the delivery: a waiting hook took it, its
// queue took it, or its extension added it. TurnStartedAt is when the session's next
// turn started after that. Both are zero until then.
AcceptedAt time.Time
TurnStartedAt time.Time
// Stalled is set when the delivery was handed to an idle session that started no
// turn within StallAfter. It is reported, never handed again because of it.
Stalled bool
}
Delivery is one agent's part of a bundle handed to a harness. A bundle carries one delivery for each agent bound to the session that has messages in it.
type HandoffManifest ¶
type HandoffManifest struct {
ID string
Session SessionKey
Boot string
Class Class
PayloadHash string
Parts []HandoffPart
CreatedAt time.Time
}
HandoffManifest freezes the payload and admitted seat allocation before handoff. It contains delivery metadata only, never bodies or credentials.
type HandoffPart ¶
HandoffPart identifies one seat's exact contribution to an immutable payload.
type HandoffWaiter ¶
HandoffWaiter accepts an immutable combined handoff or an explicitly classified legacy delivery. Existing one-seat waiters need only implement Waiter.
type Handover ¶
type Handover struct {
SessionID string
HandoffID string
Class Class
// ID is the first delivery the bundle carries, which a harness extension names when
// it confirms the bundle.
ID int64
Bundle string
// Waiter is the hook or extension connection waiting for this session to be given a
// bundle, or nil.
Waiter Waiter
}
Handover is one bundle for one session.
type Head ¶
type Head struct {
Board string
Seq int
Read *ReadPosition
}
Head is what a server's stream reports about a board: its latest sequence number, or, when Read is set, instead that one of the human's agents on it read up to a point.
type HeldMode ¶
HeldMode is an agent's delivery mode as its person set it on the agent's server. Revision is the sequence number of the board event that set it, 0 when it was never set (the mode is then focused); it only grows, so of two reads the one with the higher revision is the newer.
type Journal ¶
type Journal interface {
SaveSession(ctx context.Context, s SessionRecord) error
Sessions(ctx context.Context) ([]SessionRecord, error)
Bind(ctx context.Context, b Binding) error
BindGeneration(ctx context.Context, b Binding, advance bool) (Binding, error)
PrepareHandoff(ctx context.Context, manifest HandoffManifest) (HandoffManifest, error)
ConfirmHandoff(ctx context.Context, id string, session SessionKey, boot string, surviving []AgentKey, at time.Time) ([]Delivery, error)
Handoffs(ctx context.Context) ([]HandoffManifest, error)
Bindings(ctx context.Context) ([]Binding, error)
// ResolveIdentity attaches legacy state to the seat proved by its own token.
// It never changes rows that already name a different seat.
ResolveIdentity(ctx context.Context, old, resolved AgentRef) error
// SetMode records an agent's delivery mode: one set on this machine, or the last one
// read from a server that holds it.
SetMode(ctx context.Context, agent AgentRef, mode Mode) error
// Modes returns every agent's recorded delivery mode.
Modes(ctx context.Context) (map[AgentRef]Mode, error)
// AddDelivery records a new delivery with its messages and returns its id.
AddDelivery(ctx context.Context, d Delivery) (int64, error)
// UpdateDelivery saves a delivery's state, session, attempts, reason and retry
// time. Its messages don't change.
UpdateDelivery(ctx context.Context, d Delivery) error
// Deliveries returns the deliveries in any of the given states, oldest first.
Deliveries(ctx context.Context, states ...State) ([]Delivery, error)
}
Journal records sessions, bindings and every delivery durably. It never stores tokens or message bodies.
type Message ¶
type Message = deliverytext.Message
Message is one board message as the delivery text shows it.
type Mode ¶
type Mode string
Mode is how an agent's messages reach its session. A person chooses it per agent.
const ( // ModeFocused, the default, wakes the session only for messages that concern the // agent (Concerns); the rest arrive quietly at the start of its next turn. ModeFocused Mode = "focused" // ModeAll wakes the session for every message. ModeAll Mode = "all" // ModeHumans wakes the session only for a message from a person; that bundle carries // every unread message, peer ones too. ModeHumans Mode = "humans" // ModeOff delivers nothing; the agent reads its inbox itself. ModeOff Mode = "off" // ModeAuto is the earlier name of ModeAll. It is still accepted, and read as ModeAll. ModeAuto Mode = "auto" )
Delivery modes.
type Presence ¶
type Presence string
Presence is what an agent's session is doing, as the daemon reports it to the agent's server for the board's members to see.
const ( // PresenceWorking means a turn is running in the session. PresenceWorking Presence = "working" // PresenceIdle means the session is open and waiting for messages. PresenceIdle Presence = "idle" // PresenceNoSession means no open session is bound to the agent. PresenceNoSession Presence = "no_session" )
Presences the daemon reports. It never reports waiting (the harness waiting for a person in the session): neither harness's hooks that Aboard installs say when that happens.
type Process ¶
Process is one running process. Start is when it started, in the system's own units, so a process id the system has since reused isn't mistaken for it.
type Processes ¶
type Processes interface {
Alive(p Process) bool
// StartTime returns when a running process started, in the system's own units, for
// a client that names only its process id. ok is false when it can't be read.
StartTime(pid int) (start int64, ok bool)
}
Processes reports whether a harness process still runs, so a session whose harness died without running its end hook is closed.
type ReadPosition ¶
ReadPosition is an agent's read position as the server reports it: the server is the authority on what an agent has read, whichever client acknowledged.
type Request ¶
type Request struct {
V int `json:"v"`

}
Request is one message from a hook or the CLI to the daemon.
func (Request) Key ¶
func (r Request) Key() SessionKey
Key returns the session the request is about.
type Response ¶
type Response struct {
V int `json:"v"`

// the delegation's list scope; nil when the server sent none, which is not zero.
ArchivedCount *int `json:"archived_count,omitempty"`
Error *WireError `json:"error,omitempty"`
}
Response is one message from the daemon.
type SeatBoard ¶
type SeatBoard struct {
Name string
Board json.RawMessage
}
SeatBoard is one board a delegation lists: its name, and the server's Board for it.
type SeatBoards ¶
SeatBoards is what a delegation lists: the boards, and the server's count of archived boards in the same scope, nil when the server sent none.
type SeatCreateRequest ¶ added in v0.1.1
type SeatCreateRequest struct {
BoardCreateOptions
Role, Name, Harness, Session, IdempotencyKey string
}
SeatCreateRequest creates a board and the session's seat in one server transaction.
type SeatGrant ¶
type SeatGrant struct {
Seat SeatRef
Token string
Reused bool
Board json.RawMessage
Member json.RawMessage
Mode Mode
}
SeatGrant is what the server gave the session: the seat, its new token, whether it is the session's earlier seat, the server's Board and Member for it, and its delivery mode.
type SeatRef ¶
type SeatRef struct {
Server string `json:"server"`
Board string `json:"board"`
Name string `json:"name"`
MemberID string `json:"member_id,omitempty"`
}
SeatRef names a seat: an agent on one board, keyed by its server and member id. Board and Name are for display.
type SeatRequest ¶
type SeatRequest struct {
Board, Role, Name, Harness, Session string
}
SeatRequest is a delegated join: the board, and optionally the role and name; Harness and Session (`<harness>:<id>`) are the session the daemon vouches for.
type Seats ¶
type Seats interface {
// Boards lists the boards the person can see on server, filtered by lifecycle
// (active, archived or all; empty means the server's default, active). ErrLoginMissing
// means this machine has no key for it; ErrServerUnreachable and ErrServerOutdated
// as for Join; a server's refusal is a *WireError, passed on as it is.
Boards(ctx context.Context, server, lifecycle string) (SeatBoards, error)
// Join asks server for the session's seat on a board. Errors are as for Boards; a
// lost answer is ErrServerUnreachable, never a seat.
Join(ctx context.Context, server string, req SeatRequest) (SeatGrant, error)
Create(ctx context.Context, server string, req SeatCreateRequest) (SeatGrant, error)
// Save writes a seat's token where the session's commands find it, whole or not at
// all, replacing the seat's earlier token.
Save(ctx context.Context, seat SeatRef, token string) error
// SeatID returns the member id this machine keeps for an agent, if any.
SeatID(agent AgentRef) (string, bool)
}
Seats is how the daemon reaches a server through the machine's delegation, and where it keeps the tokens of the seats it is given.
type Server ¶
type Server interface {
// Follow streams the heads of the human's boards and calls head for each, and for
// each move of the read position of one of the human's agents (Head.Read), whoever
// acknowledged, until ctx ends or the connection fails. connected is called once the
// stream is open.
Follow(ctx context.Context, connected func(), head func(Head)) error
// Inbox returns the agent's unread messages, oldest first, its read position, and
// its delivery mode as the server holds it, read together; mode is nil from a server
// that doesn't hold delivery modes.
Inbox(ctx context.Context, agent AgentRef) (msgs []Message, cursor int, mode *HeldMode, err error)
// Ack moves the agent's read position up to seq.
Ack(ctx context.Context, agent AgentRef, upTo int) error
// SetPresence reports what the agent's session is doing, and the agent's delivery
// mode, so senders can tell when a message will reach it.
SetPresence(ctx context.Context, agent AgentRef, p Presence, mode Mode) error
}
Server is one Aboard server, reached with this machine's logins.
type ServerStatus ¶
type ServerStatus struct {
URL string `json:"url"`
Connected bool `json:"connected"`
// Problem is login_missing, server_unreachable or empty.
Problem string `json:"problem,omitempty"`
}
ServerStatus is one server connection.
type SessionError ¶
SessionError is an adapter's verdict on a session, in its harness's own words: Err is ErrTargetAbsent or ErrSubAgent, and Message and Hint are what the person reads.
func (*SessionError) Error ¶
func (e *SessionError) Error() string
func (*SessionError) Unwrap ¶
func (e *SessionError) Unwrap() error
Unwrap returns Err, so errors.Is sees the kind of failure.
type SessionKey ¶
SessionKey identifies one session: the harness and the harness's own session id.
func ParseSessionKey ¶
func ParseSessionKey(s string) (SessionKey, bool)
ParseSessionKey reads "harness:id".
func (SessionKey) String ¶
func (k SessionKey) String() string
String is the form used in ABOARD_SESSION and in output: "claude-code:<id>".
type SessionRecord ¶
type SessionRecord struct {
Key SessionKey
Boot string
Open bool
// Process is the harness process the session runs in, or nil if it isn't known.
Process *Process
// Lost is the agent another session resumed while this one held it, or nil. The
// session doesn't take it back when it starts again; it says so instead.
Lost *AgentRef
// Turned is true once the session has run a turn, which a harness needs before it
// can resume the session (Claude Code saves a conversation only from its first turn).
Turned bool
UpdatedAt time.Time
}
SessionRecord is what the journal keeps of a session.
type State ¶
type State string
State is where a delivery is in its life.
const ( // StatePending waits for the session to take it. StatePending State = "pending" // StateHanded was given to the harness and waits for confirmation. StateHanded State = "handed" // StateConfirmed was received by the session and is acknowledged next. StateConfirmed State = "confirmed" // StateDone is acknowledged on the server. StateDone State = "done" // StateRetry failed for a passing reason and is tried again at RetryAt. StateRetry State = "retry" // StateHeld waits because no open session is bound to the agent. StateHeld State = "held" // StateAttention stopped after MaxAttempts failed attempts. StateAttention State = "attention" // StateSkipped can't be delivered automatically; the read position moves past it. StateSkipped State = "skipped" )
Delivery states.
type Status ¶
type Status struct {
PID int `json:"pid"`
// Build is the daemon's build; a daemon from before builds were reported leaves it
// empty.
Build Build `json:"build"`
OpenSessions int `json:"open_sessions"`
Servers []ServerStatus `json:"servers"`
Attention []StatusItem `json:"attention"`
Skipped []StatusItem `json:"skipped"`
// Stalled are deliveries handed to an idle session that started no turn within
// StallAfter, reason no_turn_started. They aren't handed again.
Stalled []StatusItem `json:"stalled"`
// MultiSeat says this daemon can bind several board seats to one session.
MultiSeat bool `json:"multi_seat,omitempty"`
Agents []AgentProblem `json:"agents"`
Bindings []BindingStatus `json:"bindings"`
}
Status is the daemon's state as aboard doctor shows it.
type StatusItem ¶
type StatusItem struct {
ID int64 `json:"id"`
Agent AgentRef `json:"agent"`
Seqs []int `json:"seqs"`
Reason string `json:"reason"`
}
StatusItem is one delivery aboard doctor lists: stopped for attention, or skipped.
type TaskWorkServer ¶ added in v0.1.2
type TaskWorkServer interface {
TaskWork(ctx context.Context, agent AgentRef) (*deliverytext.TaskWork, error)
}
TaskWorkServer reads task context with the seat's inbox; older servers omit it. It never acknowledges messages or changes task state.
type Tickets ¶
type Tickets interface {
// Take returns the agent a ticket names and removes the ticket, so it works once. ok
// is false for a ticket that doesn't exist or was already taken.
Take(ticket string) (agent AgentRef, ok bool, err error)
}
Tickets holds launch tickets: what aboard swarm up gives a session it starts, so the session's first contact with the daemon binds it to its agent with no join line.
type Waiter ¶
type Waiter interface {
// Deliver sends the bundle, the delivery id first in it, and returns once the other
// end has it. It returns ErrBusy if the connection went away first.
Deliver(ctx context.Context, id int64, bundle string) error
// Release tells a hook to exit without a bundle. An extension's connection stays
// open, so it is told nothing.
Release()
}
Waiter is a connection waiting while its session is idle: a stop hook's, or a harness extension's. Its open connection is the idle signal.
type WireError ¶
type WireError struct {
Code string `json:"code"`
Message string `json:"message"`
Hint string `json:"hint"`
// Details is structured context passed on from a server's refusal, such as
// agent_removed's agent, removed_at and removed_by.
Details map[string]any `json:"details,omitempty"`
}
WireError is an error reported over the control socket, in the shape the CLI prints.
