Go Ethereum

Official Golang implementation of the Ethereum protocol.

Optimism

The same codebase is used to run both the Sequencer. Runtime configuration will determine the mode of operation. The configuration flags can be configured using either environment variables or passed at runtime as flags.

A prebuilt Docker image is available at metisdao/l2geth.

P2P block source whitelist

Use --p2p.whitelist /path/to/block-peers.json to restrict which peers can supply blocks for import. Rules are selected using the final network ID (including --networkid and [Eth].NetworkId), not the genesis chain ID. For example:

{
  "networks": [
    {
      "networkId": 1088,
      "peers": [
        "enode://<128-character-hex-public-key>@203.0.113.10:30303"
      ]
    },
    {"networkId": 59902, "peers": []}
  ]
}

Each entry is a complete enode://PUBLIC_KEY@IP:PORT URL, parsed with the existing enode parser. Replace the example public key with the peer's actual 128-character hexadecimal public key. Key-only enodes, account addresses, private keys, hashed node IDs, hostnames and CIDR ranges are not accepted. For IPv6 use brackets, for example enode://PUBLIC_KEY@[2001:db8::1]:30303. TCP ports and optional ?discport=... values must be valid enode syntax but do not participate in whitelist matching.

Each enode binds one exact IP address to one authenticated node identity. Repeat a key with different IPs when necessary. IP matching uses the actual TCP remote address, so configure the address visible to this node after NAT, not a peer's advertised address. IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses match their IPv4 equivalents. The former { "ip": "...", "publicKey": "..." } entry format is not accepted.

geth --networkid 1088 --p2p.whitelist /path/to/block-peers.json

The path can also be set as BlockPeerWhitelistFile in the [Eth] TOML section; an explicitly supplied CLI flag overrides it. Relative paths use the process working directory. The entire JSON file is validated at startup and loaded once; restart to apply changes. Invalid files, unknown fields, invalid entries and duplicate network IDs stop startup, even if the invalid entry belongs to another network. An omitted file or network leaves block sources unrestricted. An explicit empty peers array rejects all P2P block sources for that network. The startup log reports the selected network, whether the supplied policy is active, and its rule count.

This controls full/fast block import sources, including broadcast blocks, announcements, headers, bodies, receipts and state downloaded during sync. It does not disconnect non-whitelisted peers or prevent serving their requests, broadcasting blocks/transactions, or UDP discovery. Static/trusted peers have no exemption. With no eligible source, P2P sync waits without falling back to other peers. Existing connection limits, protocol checks and --netrestrict still apply. Light-client mode rejects an active policy rather than ignoring it.

The whitelist authenticates the immediate transmitting peer, not the original block producer. Blocks forwarded by an allowed peer still undergo normal consensus and checkpoint validation. Transaction handling, local block creation, file imports and rollup data sources keep their existing behavior. The whitelist does not add peers automatically or support runtime/RPC updates.

Andromeda block hash checkpoints

Chain ID 1088 enforces 232 hardcoded block hashes, from block 0 through 23,100,000 inclusive at intervals of 100,000 blocks. The hashes were fetched from https://andromeda.metis.io on 2026-09-20 and recomputed using this client's header RLP encoding. The table is in params/block_checkpoints.go; its offline header fixtures are in params/testdata/andromeda-checkpoints.json.

Block and header imports, fast-sync receipt imports, and local block writes reject conflicting checkpoints before committing them. Known-block shortcuts and promotion of stored side chains also enforce the checkpoints. Startup checks all existing canonical checkpoint hashes in both the hot database and ancient store before header/block chain recovery or rewinding. A conflict stops startup with the height, expected hash and actual hash; it does not automatically roll back the database. Check the chain configuration and database source before replacing inconsistent data or resyncing from a known-good source.

Genesis setup and commit (genesis.go) do not perform checkpoint validation; their existing configuration and database compatibility checks still apply. Block 0 remains in the checkpoint table and is checked when opening the header/block chain, alongside the other checkpoints. These checks are mandatory for every chain using ID 1088, including custom genesis configurations that reuse it. Other chain IDs and heights without a checkpoint keep their existing validation rules. Missing checkpoints are allowed while syncing. Checkpoints supplement execution and consensus validation; they do not skip those checks or extend coverage beyond the last recorded height. Neither runtime validation nor automated tests contact the RPC endpoint.

To extend coverage, fetch eth_getBlockByNumber with full transactions disabled for each additional multiple of 100,000. Verify the returned number and 32-byte hash, decode each response as types.Header, and require Header.Hash() to match the RPC hash. Append the verified hashes and header fixtures, update the last checkpoint constant, snapshot count assertions and acquisition date, and run go test ./params ./core -run Checkpoint from this directory. Updating checkpoints requires a code release; there is no runtime override or disable flag.

OVM_ETH migration address records

While OVM mode is active (rcfg.UsingOVM), balance setters and standard OVM_ETH Transfer logs automatically record the involved addresses as SHA3 preimages. This includes zero amounts, mint/burn addresses and holders with no account leaf. No additional flag is needed; VM SHA3 preimage recording may remain disabled. Other contracts' events and Approval events do not add these records.

Normal block insertion persists each record as secure-key- || keccak256(address[20]) -> address[20]. These auxiliary records do not affect state roots, gas or receipts. They use the existing state journal and roll back with reverted execution. Records deduplicate within a block; repeated addresses may be written again in later blocks, and unique addresses increase database storage. Entries already persisted for a non-canonical block may remain as harmless address candidates.

The migration tool can read these records to locate OVM_ETH balance slots. They do not establish ERC20 retention eligibility or guarantee that a state witness is unnecessary. Upgrading only records addresses touched by subsequent execution; it does not backfill old balances, untouched holders or missing initial-state addresses. Historical replay or separate evidence is still needed for those gaps. This feature adds no history backfill command or allowance-pair index.

type CallMsg

type CallMsg struct {
	From common.Address // the sender of the 'transaction'
	To *common.Address // the destination contract (nil for contract creation)
	Gas uint64 // if 0, the call executes with near-infinite gas
	GasPrice *big.Int // wei <-> gas exchange ratio
	Value *big.Int // amount of wei sent along with the call
	Data []byte // input data, usually an ABI-encoded contract method invocation

	AccessList types.AccessList // EIP-2930 access list.

	L1Timestamp   uint64
	L1BlockNumber *big.Int
	QueueOrigin   types.QueueOrigin
}

CallMsg contains parameters for contract calls.

type ChainReader

type ChainReader interface {
	BlockByHash(ctx context.Context, hash common.Hash) (*types.Block, error)
	BlockByNumber(ctx context.Context, number *big.Int) (*types.Block, error)
	HeaderByHash(ctx context.Context, hash common.Hash) (*types.Header, error)
	HeaderByNumber(ctx context.Context, number *big.Int) (*types.Header, error)
	TransactionCount(ctx context.Context, blockHash common.Hash) (uint, error)
	TransactionInBlock(ctx context.Context, blockHash common.Hash, index uint) (*types.Transaction, error)

	// This method subscribes to notifications about changes of the head block of
	// the canonical chain.
	SubscribeNewHead(ctx context.Context, ch chan<- *types.Header) (Subscription, error)
}

ChainReader provides access to the blockchain. The methods in this interface access raw data from either the canonical chain (when requesting by block number) or any blockchain fork that was previously downloaded and processed by the node. The block number argument can be nil to select the latest canonical block. Reading block headers should be preferred over full blocks whenever possible.

The returned error is NotFound if the requested item does not exist.

type ChainStateReader

type ChainStateReader interface {
	BalanceAt(ctx context.Context, account common.Address, blockNumber *big.Int) (*big.Int, error)
	StorageAt(ctx context.Context, account common.Address, key common.Hash, blockNumber *big.Int) ([]byte, error)
	CodeAt(ctx context.Context, account common.Address, blockNumber *big.Int) ([]byte, error)
	NonceAt(ctx context.Context, account common.Address, blockNumber *big.Int) (uint64, error)
}

ChainStateReader wraps access to the state trie of the canonical blockchain. Note that implementations of the interface may be unable to return state values for old blocks. In many cases, using CallContract can be preferable to reading raw contract storage.

type ChainSyncReader

type ChainSyncReader interface {
	SyncProgress(ctx context.Context) (*SyncProgress, error)
}

ChainSyncReader wraps access to the node's current sync status. If there's no sync currently running, it returns nil.

type ContractCaller

type ContractCaller interface {
	CallContract(ctx context.Context, call CallMsg, blockNumber *big.Int) ([]byte, error)
}

A ContractCaller provides contract calls, essentially transactions that are executed by the EVM but not mined into the blockchain. ContractCall is a low-level method to execute such calls. For applications which are structured around specific contracts, the abigen tool provides a nicer, properly typed way to perform calls.

type FilterQuery

type FilterQuery struct {
	BlockHash *common.Hash // used by eth_getLogs, return logs only from block with this hash
	FromBlock *big.Int // beginning of the queried range, nil means genesis block
	ToBlock *big.Int // end of the range, nil means latest block
	Addresses []common.Address // restricts matches to events created by specific contracts

	// The Topic list restricts matches to particular event topics. Each event has a list
	// of topics. Topics matches a prefix of that list. An empty element slice matches any
	// topic. Non-empty elements represent an alternative that matches any of the
	// contained topics.
	//
	// Examples:
	// {} or nil matches any topic list
	// {{A}} matches topic A in first position
	// {{}, {B}} matches any topic in first position AND B in second position
	// {{A}, {B}} matches topic A in first position AND B in second position
	// {{A, B}, {C, D}}   matches topic (A OR B) in first position AND (C OR D) in second position
	Topics [][]common.Hash
}

FilterQuery contains options for contract log filtering.

type GasEstimator

type GasEstimator interface {
	EstimateGas(ctx context.Context, call CallMsg) (uint64, error)
}

GasEstimator wraps EstimateGas, which tries to estimate the gas needed to execute a specific transaction based on the pending state. There is no guarantee that this is the true gas limit requirement as other transactions may be added or removed by miners, but it should provide a basis for setting a reasonable default.

type GasPricer

type GasPricer interface {
	SuggestGasPrice(ctx context.Context) (*big.Int, error)
}

GasPricer wraps the gas price oracle, which monitors the blockchain to determine the optimal gas price given current fee market conditions.

type LogFilterer

type LogFilterer interface {
	FilterLogs(ctx context.Context, q FilterQuery) ([]types.Log, error)
	SubscribeFilterLogs(ctx context.Context, q FilterQuery, ch chan<- types.Log) (Subscription, error)
}

LogFilterer provides access to contract log events using a one-off query or continuous event subscription.

Logs received through a streaming query subscription may have Removed set to true, indicating that the log was reverted due to a chain reorganisation.

type PendingContractCaller

type PendingContractCaller interface {
	PendingCallContract(ctx context.Context, call CallMsg) ([]byte, error)
}

PendingContractCaller can be used to perform calls against the pending state.

type PendingStateEventer

type PendingStateEventer interface {
	SubscribePendingTransactions(ctx context.Context, ch chan<- *types.Transaction) (Subscription, error)
}

A PendingStateEventer provides access to real time notifications about changes to the pending state.

type PendingStateReader

type PendingStateReader interface {
	PendingBalanceAt(ctx context.Context, account common.Address) (*big.Int, error)
	PendingStorageAt(ctx context.Context, account common.Address, key common.Hash) ([]byte, error)
	PendingCodeAt(ctx context.Context, account common.Address) ([]byte, error)
	PendingNonceAt(ctx context.Context, account common.Address) (uint64, error)
	PendingTransactionCount(ctx context.Context) (uint, error)
}

A PendingStateReader provides access to the pending state, which is the result of all known executable transactions which have not yet been included in the blockchain. It is commonly used to display the result of ’unconfirmed’ actions (e.g. wallet value transfers) initiated by the user. The PendingNonceAt operation is a good way to retrieve the next available transaction nonce for a specific account.

type Subscription

type Subscription interface {
	// Unsubscribe cancels the sending of events to the data channel
	// and closes the error channel.
	Unsubscribe()
	// Err returns the subscription error channel. The error channel receives
	// a value if there is an issue with the subscription (e.g. the network connection
	// delivering the events has been closed). Only one value will ever be sent.
	// The error channel is closed by Unsubscribe.
	Err() <-chan error
}

Subscription represents an event subscription where events are delivered on a data channel.

type SyncProgress

type SyncProgress struct {
	StartingBlock uint64 // Block number where sync began
	CurrentBlock uint64 // Current block number where sync is at
	HighestBlock uint64 // Highest alleged block number in the chain
	PulledStates uint64 // Number of state trie entries already downloaded
	KnownStates uint64 // Total number of state trie entries known about
}

SyncProgress gives progress indications when the node is synchronising with the Ethereum network.

type TransactionReader

type TransactionReader interface {
	// TransactionByHash checks the pool of pending transactions in addition to the
	// blockchain. The isPending return value indicates whether the transaction has been
	// mined yet. Note that the transaction may not be part of the canonical chain even if
	// it's not pending.
	TransactionByHash(ctx context.Context, txHash common.Hash) (tx *types.Transaction, isPending bool, err error)
	// TransactionReceipt returns the receipt of a mined transaction. Note that the
	// transaction may not be included in the current canonical chain even if a receipt
	// exists.
	TransactionReceipt(ctx context.Context, txHash common.Hash) (*types.Receipt, error)
}

TransactionReader provides access to past transactions and their receipts. Implementations may impose arbitrary restrictions on the transactions and receipts that can be retrieved. Historic transactions may not be available.

Avoid relying on this interface if possible. Contract logs (through the LogFilterer interface) are more reliable and usually safer in the presence of chain reorganisations.

The returned error is NotFound if the requested item does not exist.

type TransactionSender

type TransactionSender interface {
	SendTransaction(ctx context.Context, tx *types.Transaction) error
}

TransactionSender wraps transaction sending. The SendTransaction method injects a signed transaction into the pending transaction pool for execution. If the transaction was a contract creation, the TransactionReceipt method can be used to retrieve the contract address after the transaction has been mined.

The transaction must be signed and have a valid nonce to be included. Consumers of the API can use package accounts to maintain local private keys and need can retrieve the next available nonce using PendingNonceAt.
